Horseback Riding
Keswick School is located in Virginia’s horse country. When Bob and Libby Wilson bought Little Keswick Farm in the 1950s, horses were fixtures on the school property and at many surrounding farms. Today, we continue this tradition through horseback riding classes for all students. Horseback riding presents a unique context for students to learn about relationships, responsibility, and safety while developing equestrian skills that can be continued after leaving Keswick School. Private, fee-based riding lessons are available up to twice a week for students who are interested in enhanced or individualized lessons.
The horseback riding program takes students along the continuum of getting comfortable with the idea of riding and caring for a horse to riding and maneuvering at various skill levels. Each student is assigned a horse that the instructor feels matches his skill level and personality. The student is responsible for taking care of the horse during his time in riding. This includes cleaning the horse, tack and stalls, and managing the horse during riding time. At the end of each school year, a horse show is presented to families and staff, and students show off all the skills learned during the year.
