Independent Living Program

A small number of our students participate in our independent living program each year. This program is housed in our Yellow House Dorm, and all members of the dorm participate in the program. The goal of our independent living program is to develop the skills necessary to find success in living in less structured settings, such as college dorms or apartments. These students wash their clothes, shop for and prepare their meals on the weekend, participate in community service, run our school store, and go to a gym off grounds. These activities teach skills like budgeting, menu prep, service to others, job responsibility, cooking, communal living, and self-care through healthy activities.

In order to be eligible for the Yellow House dorm, a student must already be enrolled at the school. While many of our students may benefit from aspects of the independent living program, we limit the program to six students. This allows students in the program to receive more in depth instruction. The small size of the program also recreates elements of apartment living and appropriately increases the social demands to reflect the realities of communal living settings.
