Afternoon Activities
Afternoon activities offered include art, woodshop, and horseback riding. Students participate in these activities on a three-week rotation. High school students may earn one elective credit in Practical Arts each year if they meet course objectives.
Arts and Crafts:
Students use the art-making process to develop and communicate ideas, images, and themes in works of art. They develop fluency in visual communication, as well as verbal and written communication, using art vocabulary and concepts. Through art production, students express meaning and values in two-dimensional and three-dimensional art forms and gain respect for their own work and the work of others. Students demonstrate safe and ethical practices when using art materials, tools, techniques, and processes.
Wood Shop:
Woodshop introduces students to general woodworking practices. Students learn and gain experience through projects, lessons, and vocabulary development. Students learn and practice tool safety for hand tools, power tools, and machinery. Projects are provided to build competencies and experience level. Students engage in community service projects such as building bird houses and Toys for Tots. Additionally, students develop math and science skills through building rubber band powered boats and pinewood derby cars.
Equestrian Program:
Students experience the therapeutic values associated with horseback riding through activities and instruction that enhances physical, emotional, social, cognitive, behavioral, and educational development. The relationship between the ride and horse promotes social and relationship development. Students are also exposed to neuromuscular stimulation, proprioception, and fine and gross motor skills when riding. Grooming and general caretaking are also critical components of the program.
Enrichment:
Enrichment classes are run by the teachers to present a particular subject in a fun, engaging way. Enrichment classes have included sportsmanship, photography, journalism, games, informal Spanish, and resume writing.
